Victorian Bioregion: Murray Mallee
Vegetation Description for Chenopod Mallee EVC 158
Eucalypt woodland to 15 m tall with a tree canopy cover of approx. 20%. Non Eucalypt canopy species can also be present; these are Allocasuarina luehmannii, Callitris gracilis ssp. murrayensis and Callitris glaucophylla. Occurs on elevated plains and low rises in a range of environmental settings. The understorey layer is a diverse mix dominated by shrub and grass species.
The groundcover of this EVC has a moderate proportion of soil crust, lichens and mosses (up to 20% cover) with a moderately low cover of logs and a moderate cover of organic litter. Typically found on well-drained surface soils covering clay sub-soils.
The desirable period between major episodic disturbances such as fire is not outlined for this EVC but is a component in forming its typical structure. (DELWP 2015)
Vegetation Description for Loamy Sands Mallee EVC 91
Semi-arid low Mallee shrubland to 5 m tall with a tree canopy cover of 25%The understorey is sparse and dominated by shrubs with some Hummock Grass present (Triodia scariosa).
The groundcover of this EVC has a moderate proportion of soil crust, lichens and mosses (up to 20% cover), a low cover of logs and a moderate cover of organic litter. Occurs on deep drifts of Lowan sands in the lee of ridge systems. Can also be found on dune crests and swales in parabolic arrangements and on irregularly arranged dunes in the Central Mallee and Sunset Country.
The desirable period between major episodic disturbances such as fire is 20 years. (DELWP 2015)
Vegetation Description for Ridged Plains Mallee EVC 96
Open, quite grassy Mallee woodland to 10 m tall with a tree canopy cover of 10%. Understorey open and dominated by grasses and herbs The groundcover of this EVC has a high proportion of soil crust, lichens and mosses (up to 30%) with a low cover of logs and a sparse cover of organic litter. Soils are somewhat variable but are typically duplex with grey or brown sandy clay loam or clay loam topsoils of aeolian origin
The desirable period between major episodic disturbances such as fire is not outlined for this EVC but is a component in forming its typical structure. (DELWP 2015)
Vegetation Description for Woorinen Mallee EVC 824
Widespread Mallee woodland to 12 m tall with a tree canopy cover of 25%. Associated with the east-west orientated calcareous dunefields of the Woorinen. Understorey dominated by low open chenopod shrub species. A diverse array of smaller shrubs, herbs and grasses are also present.
The groundcover of this EVC has a high proportion of soil crust, lichens and mosses (up to 25% cover) with a moderately low cover of logs and a moderate cover of organic litter. Typically occurs on fine textured red-brown sandy loam and clay loam soils.
The desirable period between major episodic disturbances such as fire is not outlined for this EVC but is a component in forming its typical structure. (DELWP 2014)
Vegetation Description for Woorinen Sands Mallee EVC 86
Mallee shrubland to 7 m tall with a tree canopy cover of approximately 25%. Typically supporting a hummock grass (Triodia spp.) dominated understorey. The groundcover of this EVC has a soil crust lichen and moss cover of up to 20%. There is a low number of logs and a 15% cover of organic litter. Typically occurs on fine textured red-brown sandy loam and clay loam soils.
This EVC could be considered intermediate between the heavier soil Mallee woodlands and the lighter sandy soil Mallee vegetation predominant on Lowan (siliceous) sand.
The desirable period between major episodic disturbances such as fire is not outlined for this EVC but is a component in forming its typical structure. (DELWP 2014)
Vegetation Description for Semi-arid Woodland EVC 97
Non-eucalypt woodland or open forest of low rainfall areas to 12 m tall with a tree canopy cover of 20%. The understorey is seasonally sparse with a diverse cover of shrub, herb and grass species. The groundcover of this EVC has a high proportion of soil crust, lichens and mosses (up to 30%) with a moderately low cover of logs and a moderate cover of organic litter. Occurs in a range of somewhat elevated positions not subject to flooding or inundation. The surface soils are typically light textured loamy sands or sandy loams.
The desirable period between major episodic disturbances such as fire is not outlined for this EVC but is a component in forming its typical structure. (DELWP 2014)
